Columbus State University sweeps NCCS National Basketball Championships
Forty teams from across the country competed in the 2008 NCCS National Basketball Championships, held April 18-20 on the campus of The Ohio State University. After three days of non-stop action, two teams - each from Columbus State University (GA) - took home the men's and women's championships in impressive fashion.
On the men's side, Columbus State routed Ivy Tech Community College - Indianapolis, winning 72-52. The game's leading scorer was Columbus State's Ronald Robinson who had 18 points and added 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Michael Toliver led Ivy Tech with 15 points.
The women's championship game was equally one-sided with Columbus State knocking off Miami University (OH) 62-43. Columbus State's Trelanne Moore led the way with 18 points, largely due to her hot hand from 3-point range, hitting on 4 of 6 attempts. Julie Dunham led Miami with 11 points.
After the championship games, a number of tournament accolades were awarded. North Carolina A&T State University and the University of Iowa took home the Men's and Women's Sportsmanship Awards, respectively.
The Men's Tournament MVP went to Columbus State's Nick Malinowski. He was joined on the Men's All-Tournament First Team by teammate Ronal Robinson. Rounding out there first team were Thelonious Eaton (Ivy Tech Community College - Indianapolis); Derick Caldwell (University of Missouri); and Benjamin Patterson (University of Texas - San Antonio).
Phebe Smith of Columbus State was named the Tournament MVP for the women. Ashley Bartles (University of Missouri); Julie Longo (Central Michigan University); Cheron Bland (Fort Lee); and Brittany Wheeler (Miami University) joined her on the Women's All-Tournament First Team.
Thirty officials were also on hand to call the weekend's action. Six were named All-Tournament, including Chris Copeland (Georgia Southern University); Tyler Ford (Ball State University); Brandon Hiers (University of Florida); Emily Liming (University of Florida); Ryan Rickard (Georgia Southern University); and Chris Risher (Georgia Institute of Technology).
